Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)

Overview

What is chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy?

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a neurological disease that targets your body’s nerves. The inflammation from CIDP to your body’s nerves causes numbness, weakness, pain and/or motor impairment to both sides of the body, usually arms and legs. CIDP symptoms are progressive over 8 weeks and improve with ongoing treatment.

How common is chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy?

CIDP is more common in older adults at an average age of 50, and more common in men than women. The presence of this rare neurological disease is low at 5-7 cases per 100,000 individuals. It is estimated that in the U.S. approximately 40,000 people are affected.1

Symptoms1

What are the symptoms of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy?

The most common symptom of CIDP is the progressive nerve damage that causes the muscles in the hip, shoulders, hands and arms on both sides of the body to become weak and/or loose sensation and motor function. Weakened muscles will reduce the ability to walk. Lost nerve sensation may cause numbness, tingling or stinging sensations. The severity of these symptoms varies from person to person. CIDP may also cause symptoms of pain, tiredness, burning, difficulty swallowing and double vision.

How is it diagnosed?

Early recognition is important, however, there is no well-established diagnostic test for CIDP. Nerve conduction testing, brain imaging and electrical nerve signaling tests are among the different diagnostics used to help confirm CIDP along with patient history.
