Accredo has a deep history in specialty pharmacy that began with distributing hemophilia products in the 1980’s and has led us to our position as the leader in providing specialty pharmacy services and programs.
In 1983, Southern Health Systems, Inc. (SHS) was formed to distribute clotting factor and Protropin®, a human growth hormone, throughout the Southeast. In 1990, Nova Factor, Inc. (NFI) was created as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SHS.
Accredo Health, Incorporated, was organized in 1996 and acquired SHS and NFI In 1997. Seeking additional growth within the specialty market, Accredo then acquired Hemophilia Health Services, Inc., which had originally been started by a mother in response to her son's hemophilia.
Accredo became a publicly traded company in 1999 and since that time has made over a dozen more acquisitions to expand services, specialties and access to specialty medications. Accredo now enjoys the broadest access to specialty medications in the industry, including many exclusive and limited-distribution drugs.
The Joint Commission (formerly known as JCAHO) is the most widely recognized patient safety and quality distinction in the home care industry. Accredo locations have been continuously accredited by The Joint Commission Home Care Accreditation Program since 2003. Beginning in 2011, Accredo pursued and received URAC Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation. The major Accredo locations in Warrendale PA, Corona CA, Greensboro NC, Orlando FL, Indianapolis IN, Memphis and Nashville TN are currently accredited by URAC.
In 2004, Medco Health Solutions, Inc., and Accredo Health, Inc., announced a strategic alliance for specialty pharmacy. Accredo Health, Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Medco on August 18, 2005.
In 2012, Accredo and CuraScript SP Specialty Pharmacy came together as a result of the merger between Express Scripts and Medco. Accredo is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Express Scripts.
Accredo continues to expand its position in the specialty pharmacy industry. Starting with a directed focus on rare diseases with only 22 specialty medications in its portfolio, Accredo now dispenses more than 300 specialty drugs from more than 30 dispensing pharmacies nationwide.
