Patients with chronic anemia, such as sickle cell, thalassemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes, require blood transfusions as part of their treatment regimen. These blood transfusions can lead to chronic iron overload, which can damage the heart and liver.

Exjade has been approved for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in adults and children age two and older. It treats chronic iron overload by helping the body get rid of excess iron through bodily waste.
