Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease that involves the central nervous system—specifically the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS can cause problems with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, sensation, and mental functions.
Nerves and nerve fibers connect the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves to one another. MS results from the destruction of the myelin sheath, a protein coating which surrounds and protects nerve fibers. When myelin becomes inflamed or is destroyed—a process called demyelination—the result is an interruption in the normal flow of nerve impulses through the central nervous system.
