Specialty pharmacy management

We’re selective about which therapies we choose to support and engage an independent advisory board1 to establish strict criteria for designating a specialty drug. The focus of our pharmacy is on injectable, infusible, and oral drugs that:

  • Are used recurrently to treat complex and chronic diseases
  • Are expensive
  • Are difficult to administer
  • Require ongoing clinical monitoring
  • May cause adverse reactions
  • May have special shipping and handling requirements
  • May require an FDA-mandated Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS).
Our services help simplify the difficult process for patients with complex and chronic diseases, helping to ensure that they receive and take their medication as prescribed.

Accredo implements patient-specific therapy support services and manufacturer-contracted programs, all from a single convenient source.
  • Therapy-specific teams. Experienced professionals (both clinical and administrative) work exclusively with one product or with a related group of therapies.
  • Specialized storage and shipping. We keep our inventory in modern, temperature-controlled facilities and follow packaging and handling protocols designed to maintain product integrity.
  • Wholesale services. Some payors require the physician to buy and bill. When appropriate, we provide wholesale services to support the unique needs of the manufacturer and product. Our wholesale service also provides access to hospitals to enable hospitalized patients to either start or continue therapy while an inpatient.
  • Benefit research. Reimbursement specialists explain coverage and pharmacy options to our patients.
  • Triage services. Occasionally, Accredo is out of a given network and unable to service a patient. In such instances, we route the prescription to a participating pharmacy and notify the doctor, patient, and/or clearinghouse.
  • Counseling programs. Our pharmacists provide extensive initial therapy counseling. Our nurses can teach patients self-injection or self-infusion techniques. Our clinical teams are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by phone to answer questions and provide support.
  • Reimbursement assistance. We manage compassionate need programs for the uninsured and underinsured, according to a given manufacturer’s requirements.
  • Product replacement programs. Our pharmacy team can process replacement requests according to the manufacturer’s specifications and then ship the replacement product with approval.
1 A group of independent healthcare professionals charged with reviewing, advising, and proposing recommendations in the following areas:
  • Specialty pharmacy product candidates for their inclusion or exclusion in the Accredo specialty pharmacy program.
  • Clinical rationale and content of therapy management protocols
  • Clinical guidelines applied to specialty products dispensed from Accredo pharmacies
  • Clinical outcomes that arise from Accredo’s therapy management programs and specialty services
  • Individual cases involving matters of specialty pharmacy practice or specialty benefit management practices
